Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a vision condition in which near objects are seen clearly but distance objects do not come into proper focus. When the eyeball is too long or the cornea (the front surface of the eye) has too much curvature, light entering the eye is not focused properly causing the distortion of distant vision. Myopia is a common vision condition which affects nearly 30% of the population. Corrective lenses in the form of eye glasses or contact lenses may be prescribed to correct this vision condition.

WHAT DOES FARSIGHTED MEAN?

Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is a vision condition in which distant objects are usually seen clearly, but close objects are not brought into proper focus. If the length of the eyeball is too short, the lens of the eye cannot bring near objects into a sharp and clearly focused image. Corrective lenses in the form of eye glasses or contact lenses may be prescribed to correct this vision condition.

WHAT IS PRESBYOPIA?

Presbyopia is a vision condition in which the focusing ability of the eye gradually decreases causing vision at normal reading distances to become blurred. The natural aging process causes the lens of the eye to lose flexibility and the actual decline in focusing ability may occur over many years. However, presbyopia usually becomes apparent to people in their early to mid forties. Reading glasses, bifocals, trifocals or contact lenses may be prescribed to compensate for the visual problems associated with presbyopia.

WHAT IS ASTIGMATISM?

Astigmatism is a condition in which one or more of the eye’s focusing surfaces is not evenly curved. This causes images of objects to be distorted. In most cases, glasses or contact lenses are used to balance the distortion.

IS 20/20 PERFECT VISION?

20/20 vision (or 6/6 in metric) is a term used to express normal visual acuity (clarity or sharpness of vision) measured at a distance of twenty feet. A person with “20/20” vision can see clearly at twenty feet what should normally be seen at that distance. A person with “20/100” vision must be as close as twenty feet to see what normally can be seen at a distance of one hundred feet. The twenty foot standard is used for consistency and does not refer to perfect vision. Good vision consists of many visual skills including side vision, focusing ability, eye-muscle action, eye co-ordination, depth perception, and others.
